How Have Children's Lives Changed?
Some may say children's lives have changed for the better since the 1960's, others disagree. Our more updated technology means that children have a lot more opportunities. We now have computers and 'Google', thing that have helped massively in improving children's educations. However, is their use of IPads and mobile phones becoming excessive? Are they sending too much time on social media? This wasn't even an option in the sixties, where most entertainment came from outside, whilst playing with their friends or playing with simple but exciting toys like Play-Doh or some marbles. Going out wasn't all about looking their absolute best. They wore what they were given. Whether it was a plain dress for girls or grey shorts and a t-shirt for boys. They didn't have the cool printed designs on clothing that we have today or the infinite styles of shoes. School has to be one of the most major differences from the sixties. Everything is different, from the subjects they learnt, to the way they were punished. Physical punishment is no longer excepted and while for some, this believed more morally correct, others think that this is the cause of the increasing bad behaviour schools experience. A detention or 'some time off school' (suspension) isn't always enough to put an end to the bad behaviour.
Although we may not realise it, we have brought a lot through from the 1960's. Many of our children's games are adaptions from those of the sixties even some of our children's fashion ideas, like short skirts (and now shorts) and the vibrantly coloured materials. Even some school activities like singing and games in PE relate back to school days around 50 years ago.
